simply stated from Merriam Webster dictionary, they are ”a mythical being with the ability to shape shift between human and seal forms”.
unlike mermaids or sirens, selkies do not seek to trick or lure people to their watery depths. they’re driven mostly by curiosity and desire to connect to something or someone they do not quite understand.
once upon a myth, selkies came on land as seals and shed their seal skin, known as their ‘selkie suit’. however, as often happens in stories, it is taken by someone with malintent, leading human and selkie to work together to regain the selkie suit, and insomuch the selkies connection to the sea. they succeed and although they soon after part ways, the bit of magic that’s experienced lingers in small ways. opening minds up to the possibilities that lie in the corners and silhouettes of our everyday lives.
